Nashville Mayor announces 2010 Flood Digital History Project...

Nashville Mayor Karl Dean recently announced plans for a 2010 Flood Digital History Project. According to The Tennessean...

The May flood dispersed 41 inches of water into Paul Cart's Bellevue home. He has told his story several times since May, but a citywide effort will soon elevate stories like Cart's through digital media.

"Living in makeshift locations, 101 nights in hotel rooms, but now I'm back home," Cart said. "A lot of folks understand that the flood happened, but if you didn't go through it, you don't fully understand. If you can see and hear the story on a personal level, that brings life to what happened on May 2."

On Thursday, Mayor Karl Dean announced plans for the Flood 2010 Digital History Project, which will utilize videos, photographs and personal accounts to record the May flood's aftermath. The Nashville Public Library and 11 other community agencies will interview first responders, business owners and residents who experienced the flood. The interviews will begin in January, and the digital project will be presented in June.

"Six months ago doesn't feel like history to any of us yet, especially as we continue to work on the city's recovery, but it's important that we begin work now to preserve information about the flood," Dean said in a written statement.

Two weeks after the flood, Andrea Blackman, special collections division manager for the Downtown Nashville Public Library, met with city officials about the need to document the devastation after the flood. Blackman now serves as project coordinator for the history project.

The interviews, photographs and other documents collected for the project will be uploaded on a website, www.library.nashville.org/flood/index.html, Blackman said. The project mirrors similar oral history presentations created after Hurricane Katrina.
